Alternative Fuel Fleet Study

Lower Merion Township has a strong track record of environmental awareness. Fleet manager Steven DeCarlo was interested in alternative fuels and technologies, and envisioned a complete study of his 200 plus vehicle fleet. With a state of the art maintenance facility in place, incorporating energy efficient lighting and lifts, closed system dripless fluid recovery systems and source selection of biodegradable materials and fluids, what better fit than a full assessment of his options for alternative fuels? The Township contracted Clean Fuels Consulting to examine its existing fleet, and make recommendations on options for incorporating one or more alternative fuels into operations.  Information was generated on fuel and vehicle options, the logistical pros and cons of the fuels, geographic proximity of similar installations, and the cost of each fuel and associated infrastructure. The icing on the cake was an outline of where to look for additional funding to incorporate the technologies, and a timeline of when the grant programs would likely open during the calendar year. 

With the final report in hand, the Township was able to afford its Environmental Advisory Committee a full set of information on green fleet options, in order to proceed as “experts on the subject”.
